Conversion of civil partnership to marriage

Couples in civil partnerships will be able to convert these to a marriage with effect from Wednesday 10 December 2014. You will need to attend in person at any local authority for an appointment with the superintendent registrar in the register office;

You will also be required to provide evidence of your identity and of the civil partnership registration and will sign a declaration to confirm that you have not dissolved your civil partnership and that you both want to convert your civil partnership to a marriage. The declaration is signed in the register office; There is no ceremony attached to the conversion.

The celebration

You do not go through a marriage ceremony, however you may of course choose to have a celebration or non-statutory ceremony after the conversion, in a location of your choice.
